Colombia has emerged as one of Latin America's top destinations for tourists, digital nomads and expats. Resolución 5477 de 2022 requires travel insurance for multiple visa categories. Here is the complete 2026 guide.

Resolución 5477 de 2022: Which Visas Require Insurance

Colombia's Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores requires travel insurance for: Visa de Trabajo, Visa de Estudiante, Visa de Inversionista, Visa de Pensionado, Visa de Reunificación Familiar, Visa de Inmigrante, Visa Nómada Digital and other M-type and R-type visa categories. Required coverage: medical expenses, hospitalization, emergency evacuation and repatriation. IATI meets and exceeds all requirements.

Healthcare in Colombia for Foreign Visitors

Colombia has excellent private clinics in Medellín (Clínica Las Américas, El Rosario, Clínica CES) and Bogotá (Fundación Santa Fe, Clínica del Country). Private consultation: USD 25-60. Hospitalization: USD 100-400 per night. Significantly cheaper than USA or Europe but not free. Without insurance, costs accumulate quickly during a hospitalization.

Medellín: Latin America's Nomad Capital

Medellín has become Latin America's top digital nomad destination: excellent fiber internet, year-round spring climate, affordable living and a vibrant expat community. IATI annual plans satisfy the Visa Nómada Digital insurance requirement and cover full medical expenses during your stay.

Cartagena, Santa Marta and the Coast

Colombia's Caribbean coast attracts beach and diving tourists. Cartagena has good private hospitals. Santa Marta has adequate facilities. Remote areas of the coast and Tayrona National Park have limited medical infrastructure. IATI covers evacuation from remote coastal areas.

Amazon and Remote Areas

The Colombian Amazon (Leticia, Puerto Nariño) has extremely limited medical facilities. Any serious medical emergency requires evacuation to Bogotá or Medellín. IATI covers full medical evacuation from remote Amazonian areas including air transport costs.
