10 Schengen Visa Insurance Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected in 2026

Travel insurance errors are among the top reasons for Schengen visa rejection. After reviewing hundreds of failed applications, here are the 10 most common insurance mistakes — and exactly how to avoid every one of them.

Mistake 1: Coverage Below EUR 30,000

The minimum is EUR 30,000. Some insurers offer EUR 25,000 or EUR 20,000 plans that appear similar but do not meet the Schengen requirement. The consulate will reject any certificate showing less than EUR 30,000 in medical coverage.

Mistake 2: No Repatriation Coverage

Repatriation — the transport of a sick or deceased person to their home country — must be explicitly included on the certificate. 'Medical coverage' alone is not sufficient. IATI explicitly states repatriation coverage on every certificate.

Mistake 3: Dates Do Not Match

The insurance certificate must cover the exact dates of your intended travel, including the first and last day. A certificate that starts one day after your entry date is grounds for rejection. IATI allows you to specify exact dates at purchase.

Mistake 4: Not Valid in All Schengen Countries

If you plan to visit multiple Schengen countries, the certificate must explicitly cover all of them or state 'all Schengen countries' or 'Europe'. A certificate covering only France when you plan to also visit Germany and Italy is insufficient.

Mistakes 5-10: Format, Language and Insurer Issues

Mistake 5: Certificate not in a language the consulate accepts (IATI issues in English, accepted everywhere). Mistake 6: Policy not purchased before the application date. Mistake 7: Using a local insurer not recognized by European consulates. Mistake 8: Policy has a deductible (some consulates reject policies with excess/deductibles). Mistake 9: Coverage excludes pre-existing conditions without disclosure. Mistake 10: Certificate is a quote, not a confirmed policy — IATI issues confirmed policy certificates only.
