New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world — birthplace of bungee jumping, world-class skydiving, glacier hiking and white-water rafting. Here is what your insurance must cover.
Adventure Activities in New Zealand
AJ Hackett Bungy at Kawarau Bridge (43m) and Nevis Highwire (134m). Skydiving at Franz Josef, Queenstown and Abel Tasman. Glacier hiking on Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. White-water rafting on the Shotover and Wairoa rivers. All of these are covered by IATI standard plans.
Healthcare in New Zealand
New Zealand has a good public healthcare system (ACC — Accident Compensation Corporation) that covers accidents for visitors, including tourists. However, ACC does not cover illness, only accidents. For illness (food poisoning, infection, respiratory conditions), you need separate medical coverage. IATI covers both accident and illness.
Helicopter Rescue in NZ Mountains
New Zealand's Southern Alps and Fiordland have extremely remote terrain. Helicopter rescue following a hiking accident can cost NZD 3,000-15,000. IATI covers mountain rescue costs including helicopter extraction. The Milford Track and Routeburn Track are particularly remote.
Extreme Sports: What Is and Is Not Covered
IATI covers: bungee jumping, skydiving (as passenger), glacier hiking with a guide, white-water rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking. Excluded: professional competition, BASE jumping, activities expressly prohibited by the operator or done against safety instructions.
Getting Around New Zealand
Driving on the left on rural roads with sheep crossings is a genuine hazard for international visitors. Car rental accidents are common. IATI covers road accident medical treatment. New Zealand's ACC covers accident costs but not all vehicle-related liability scenarios — your rental car excess insurance is separate.
